Create Worthwhile Goals

Disclaimer: this is not an original idea. I scooped it from Sarah over at Yes and Yes.

First thing, I'm not here to judge what makes a worthwhile goal. If it matters to you, it matters and I think that's worthwhile.

What I am here to do is suggest that experience focused goals are more interesting than habit focused ones and maybe it's time to drop the stupid goals that I usually have. I'm dead bored of writing "lose 5lbs" and "stop hitting snooze for 45 minutes every morning" because those goals just stress me out. For me, they're rarely achievable or maintainable in a long term way and somewhere down the road, I just feel like I failed.

Goals are supposed to make life better - not more stressful. I mean, can we agree we have enough of that in our lives?

So this year, I'm writing down 12 interesting goals. Goals focused on adventures. Only a little ambitious, while comfortably grounded in realistic at one per month.
  • Read Lolita
  • Take a photography class
  • Eat Mexican street corn
  • Watch Breakfast at Tiffanys
  • Take myself to a museum
  • Make homemade ice cream
  • Go on an overnight trip solo
  • Meditate every day for a week
  • Learn about wine making
  • Join a book club
  • Go sledding
  • Volunteer
Maybe I'll do all of them, but even if I only do half of them, they'll certainly create an interesting experience.

What do you think - what are your goals for the next few months?
